American Roulette: All you Need to Now

American roulette is a casino classic. It has been featured in countless movie scenes, and its traditional set up makes it the most instantly recognizable casino game of all time. The click of the spinning wheel and the tumbling ball elicit excitement in anyone who’s watching, and all of this is encapsulated in American roulette online.

Countless hours have been spent on creating captivating online roulette tables, which capture those familiar sounds from the real-world versions of the game. Here at Bodog, we offer our players the chance to enjoy both American Roulette and Classic American Roulette. Both versions have been developed in house, with the minimum and maximum bet set at $1 and $500 respectively.  So , whether you’re the kind of player who puts it all on one number and waits for that big payout, or you’d prefer to split things down the middle and have a couple of dollars on black, we’ve got a game that you’ll love.

One of the best features when you decide to play American roulette online is that you can refer to the paytable whenever you’d like to. Not everyone can remember the potential payout odds for each bet type (it’s 1:1, by the way) or what your percentage chance is of landing a column bet (that’s 31.6%), so, it’s great having all of the information available at your fingertips.

If you’d like to get started playing one of the great American classics, it’s as simple as registering for a free account and making your first bet.

Difference Between American Roulette and European Roulette

If you’re looking to play online roulette, then you’ve got two main choices - American and European roulette. The main difference between these two roulette variations is that European roulette has a single zero, while American roulette has a double zero.

If you want to play online roulette for real money, then either game is a great choice. The house edge is higher in American roulette, but the familiarity often makes up for that for gamers.  However, both types of roulette are available to play here at Bodog, so if you value a lower house edge then you can play European roulette online too.

The split in variations occurred all the way back in 1843, when in Europe the first wheel with a single zero was introduced. Before this, all wheels had two zeros, some even had a square with an eagle on it. So, if you appreciate the history of the game, American roulette is technically the original.

Rules of American roulette

Getting started with American roulette is easy. First, you need to look at the betting layout and decide where you’d like to bet your money. The betting layout correlates to the American roulette wheel, and the bets that you can place on it are known as inside bets and outside bets

Inside bets are riskier, but offer bigger payouts, as they are statistically less likely to come in. Outside bets are safer, but have smaller payouts because they are statistically more likely to come in.

If you’d like your bankroll to last for a long time, generally, people who play online American roulette will advise you to place more outside bets. These should generate a steadier stream of wins. If you’d like to try your luck at big wins and you’ve got a decent sized bankroll, then feel free to have fun with inside bets. These wins will come less often, but when they do, they’ll be much larger.

Once you’ve decided on the bet that you’d like to place, select the amount that you want to wager and get ready to watch the ball roll. If the ball lands on a square that’s part of your bet, then you’ll be paid out immediately, and you can carry onto the next round. If you don’t get lucky this time, then play simply continues so that you can try again on the next spin.

American Roulette House Edge

The house edge is the term we use when describing the mathematical advantage that the casino has over the player. In the case of American roulette, the house edge works out to be about 5.25%.

This is because the American roulette wheel has a single zero and a double zero square that don’t pay out if the ball lands on them. These zero squares skew the odds just slightly in favour of the casino, making the American roulette house edge that 5.25% figure.

American Roulette Odds and Payouts

Understanding the odds in American roulette is crucial when managing your bankroll effectively. We already talked a little about inside and outside bets, but now it’s time to go into more detail, so that you can fully understand the American roulette odds.

Red or black, even or odd, high, and low bets would all have odds of 50% coming in, but with the addition of the two zero squares, it takes the odds down to 47.31%. The payout for these bets is 1:1, meaning that if you put $10 on and win, you’ll get $10 back, plus your stake.

The next most popular set of bets are dozen, column, and snake bets. These have odds of 31.6% and pay out at 2:1, so the American roulette payouts would work as follows. If you put $10 on and win, you’ll get $20 back, plus your stake.

The final set of bets are known as inside bets, and they have a much smaller chance of happening, but much higher payouts if they do. A single number has the highest payout at 35:1 but has only a 2.6% chance of happening, meaning you’d have to be seriously lucky for it to happen. However, if it is your lucky day then a $10 bet would get you $350 back, plus your initial stake .

Other Roulette Games Available at Bodog

American roulette isn’t the only roulette variation we boast of here at Bodog Casino. European roulette is readily available for those wanting to switch up their continents, with the biggest difference here being that they have only one zero pocket as opposed to the two (0 & 00) available on an American table.

Virtual Burning Roulette really turns up the heat, with numbers, sections and colours showing as hot or cold based on recent gameplay.
